In this version, I tried to give myself a challenge after trying it with the hair.
Basically, it was a no-water (mostly, anyways) challenge, since I recall hearing that if I depended on that tool too much, it could damage my abilities as an artist later on.
Makes sense. It hurt my hand regardless, but good advice. xD
So, here's this version~ I like it, but I like the softer version better.
This one, the colours stand out more. But it also looks cartoonier, so... xD

BG is meant to be a school field. Since I wasn't in the mood to care about buildings, I just did a simply shade job then erased the excess.
There IS a bit of lineart for that side of the building, but it follows the blend lineart style, not the usual black style (if that makes any sense).

The coloring on their hair is especially crisp. I honestly think you might be on to something here.
Try experimenting more with what you did with the hair here. It'll produce an amazingly crisp that the water brush tool can't give you.
